Nuri Sahin goes viral for protecting referee from his own players

Nuri Sahin, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, has been praised by football fans on social media after protecting a referee from his own players.

Sahin, 34, currently manages Turkish top-flight club Antalyaspor, who suffered a 2-1 defeat against Fenerbahce this week.

Haji Wright gave Antalyaspor the lead early in the first half but two goals in seven minutes from Michy Batshuayi, the second of which was a penalty, turned the game on its head and sealed all three points for the visitors.

Antalyaspor’s players ran to confront referee Kadir Saglam at the full-time whistle due to their unhappiness with his performance, according to The Mirror.

The report claims the players were aggrieved because they felt they were unfairly denied a draw due to decisions taken by Saglam throughout the 90 minutes.

Fearing the situation was in danger of spiralling out of control, Sahin rushed towards the referee and his assistants to protect them from his own players.

With his arms outstretched and Saglam stood behind him, Sahin firmly told his players to back away.

A manager protecting a referee from his own players? Now there’s something you don’t see every day.

The refreshing footage has sparked a big reaction from football fans on social media, praising Sahin for his actions:

As the footage shows, someone from Antalyaspor’s ranks was shown a red card, much to Sahin’s annoyance – though it doesn’t appear to have been issued to a player.

What else happened?

The Mirror’s report reveals how Antalyaspor have requested the logs of the dialogue between the match officials and those in the VAR studio.

They have since labelled Saglam a ‘novice’, citing previous grievances with the Turkish ref, in a strongly-worded statement labelled ‘Darkness of night’.

It reads:  “In Turkish football, Sivas and Gaziantep yesterday, Antalya today, is another city where a dark night will be experienced tomorrow.

“We knew Kadir Saglam before. Let’s remember: In the Kasimpasa match we played in the 5th week of this season, tonight’s referee Kadir Saglam was also the one who did not give a red card to Larsson’s face in the match against Kasimpasa, but who made up a penalty in the position and who was suspended for 4 weeks after this match.

“We said we don’t want novice referees. In today’s match, the same referee who assisted Fenerbahce’s first goal, sought the penalty and made up the offside, despite being stopped by a foul while attacking with Bunyamin while he was ahead 1-0.

“We wonder if there’s any offside talk in the VAR recordings. We demand clarification, we believe that TFF’s understanding of transparency requires it.

“We are against the order that treats Anatolian clubs to the championship race. We demand justice not only for our community, but for all Anatolian clubs.”
